John Deere D160 Lawn Mower Reviews and Specs

John Deere tractors were first introduced in 1963, since then, John Deere has managed to manufacture new and better lawn and garden versions every year. The John Deere 160 Lawn Tractor was launched for home yard mowing in 1986, and the rest, as they say, is history.

The John Deere 160 Lawn Tractor was a late addition to the 100 Series and was a descendent of the original John Deere 110 Lawn Tractor. Deere’s initial series of lawn tractors revolutionized how people cared for their lawns, gardens, and yards. In reality, it provided urban landowners with a mower that had the look and power of a “large farm.”

The John Deere 160 was created twenty-four years after the initial model was debuted, with technical and mechanical enhancements that included increases to engine power, ergonomic design, steering, attachments, and much more. The John Deere 160, like the 100 Series machines before it, successfully clipped grass that flew into a bag, eliminating the need to gather up trash. Furthermore, the tractor’s mobility allowed operators to go as near to flower beds, fence posts, and paths as needed without needing to finish the work with a weed whacker.

Lastly, operators may choose from a variety of appropriate accessories, such as a 38″ mower deck, a front-mount blade, and a 38″ snowblower. These accessories contributed to the John Deere 160 being a more versatile machine capable of duties other than cutting grass.

What Makes a John Deere D160 a Popular Choice?

What Makes a John Deere D160 a Popular Choice

The John Deere D160 is among the two largest versions in John Deere’s 100 series for 2011. The only larger model is the John Deere D170. The John Deere D130 and JD D110 are two smaller variants. The JD D160 is powered by a Briggs & Stratton Extended Life Series (ELS) 44 engine. The model number is ’44’ since the displacement is 44 inches (or 0.725 liters in metric terms). The gasoline engine is a two-cylinder, air-cooled V twin with natural aspiration. The engine produces a total of 24 horsepower. The engine cleans the air intake before it enters the combustion chambers via cartridge air filters. Plus, there is a 12-volt battery.

Depending on the version, the John Deere D160 has a variety in the type of fuel tanks (California model or regular model). The Californian model’s fuel tank can contain up to 9.1 liters (2.4 US gallons) of gasoline. On the other hand, the ordinary variant has a much larger petrol tank, i.e., 15.1 liters (4 US gallons). So, if you’re a contractor or have a lot of grass to cut and don’t want to keep refilling it, opt for the normal model rather than the California JD D160.

The weight of the John Deere D160 is 240 kg (528 lbs). It has a maximum width of 1.53 meters whenever the cutting deck is mounted (60 inches). Fortunately, the JD D160 may be used both in the winter and in the summer. While there won’t be much grass to trim in the winter, you can clear snow with a JD 44-inch snowblower. However, it can also accept a wide range of different attachments, making this garden tractor lawnmower extremely versatile.

The John Deere D160 is a D100 series 2WD lawn tractor. From 2011 through 2017, John Deere produced this tractor in Greeneville, Tennessee, USA. The D160 is powered by a 0.7 L V-twin gasoline engine and a hydrostatic gearbox with unlimited forward and backward gears.

The Briggs & Stratton 44 engine powers the JD D160 lawn tractor. It has a 0.7 L, 724 cm2, (44.2 cubic inches) two-cylinder spontaneous aspirated gasoline engine with a cylinder bore of 79.0 mm (3.11 in) and a piston stroke of 73.0 mm (2.87 in). The highest output power of this engine was 24.3 PS (17.9 kW; 24.0 HP).

The John Deere D160 has manual steering, automatic shoe-on transaxle brakes, an exposed operating station, and a fuel tank capacity of 9.0 liters (2.4 US gallons or 2 Imperial gallons).

  • For the John Deere D160 lawn tractor, various modifications are available.
  • John Deere Edge 48: 48-inch mid-mount (1,210 mm) Mower deck with three blades and a manual spring-assisted lift.
  • 46 inches John Deere (1,160 mm) front-facing blade.
  • John Deere 44 inches front-mount snowblower measuring 43.25 inches (1,090 mm).

John Deere D160 Features

John Deere D160 Features

Now, that you have the clear idea of specifications, let’s dig into the major features in detail that will help you in your buying decision.

#1. V-Twin Cylinder Design

The D160 riding lawnmower has a 25-horsepower motor, while the D140 riding mower has a 22-horsepower engine. Both engines are V-twin cylinders. This results in increased torque, less vibration, and improved audio quality. The motors start fast thanks to electronic ignition, and they feature cast-iron sleeves for greater life.

#2. Transportation

The hydrostatic gearboxes in the John Deere D160 and the D140 riding mowers, provide operators with a wide variety of speeds to select from while on the go. Mower pedals differ in structure and movement, attempting to make them easily identifiable when the equipment is in there.

#3. Cutting

In terms of cutting, both riding mowing tractors use John Deere’s EdgeTM Cutting System. They have deep-deck mower designs for consistent, clean cuts. They also feature curled outside borders for added strength and security. As an optional attachment, a mulch cover can be employed.

#3. Full-Functioning Engine

The D160 riding mower, unlike the D140, features a full-featured engine. This means that it is specially built to last a long period and save money in the long run. It boasts a cool-running overhead valve, wear-resistant chrome-plated valve stems, and a superior bearing package.

#4. Maintenance

The hoods of the John Deere D140 and the D160 riding mowers are easy to open and maybe lifted for service as needed. When the hood is raised, all service points are accessible, and a service interval decal is positioned inside the hood for convenience.

#5. Structure

Both these mowers are built with a robust one-piece frame made of 12-gauge, 0.11-inch steel. The full-length welded frame is built for optimum strength and longevity. The fender deck is connected to the frame as a single component.
