John Deere 2305 Compact Tractor Review, Specs & Problems

Jokes aside, at first, I perceived this compact tractor to be a full-size tractor shrunk by mistake. However, there was some sense of love at first sight. It took me time to notice that it was just a small tractor available in a large body. Upon getting behind its wheel, all my initial perceptions flew away. In a nutshell, John Deere 2305 compact tractor is an accurate description of a little tractor with a big heart.

Don’t get it twisted; I’m not here for a paycheck. I’m simply in awe of this John Deere 2305 compact tractor. It’s got it’s share of problems and crappy little things–we’ll get to that later.

It’s arguably the best choice for gardeners looking to conserve space. You can even store it inside a regular garage if you wish. You just need to ensure that it is high enough since its protection system against roll-overs doesn’t fold down.

I don’t mean to blow trumpets, but I’ve been an avid gardener for many decades. As such, I’ve interacted with untold gardening tools and machinery.

From basic machetes to these lawnmowers and predecessor John Deere tractors, I’ve seen it all. But believe you me; I’m yet to encounter any garden tractor that’s as versatile as this John Deere 2305 compact tractor.

This heavenly garden king has tons of options for the front and middle. Under its deck, mowing lays a unique ability to perform as a riding lawnmower. Hold on for that and many more about this JD 2305 but first, where did it all begin?

Origin of John Deere Compact Tractor

John Deere 2305 compact tractor belongs to JD 2000 series. It was manufactured by John Deere in Georgia, the USA, between the years 2006 and 2011.

Having acquired mine in 2012, it means I was among the first buyers. However, I believe there has been no compromise of quality since its inception. So, if it appeals to you, rest assured you’ll get something superb with this package.

Origin of Jd 2305 compact Tractor

Over the years, John Deere 2305 has proved excellent in two categories; small tractor with an unrivaled big heart or a lawnmower on steroids.

Whichever way you look at it, be guaranteed that this 1.450 lb tractor is ever ready to tackle whichever job task you throw at it.

Things to Note About John Deere 2305 Compact Tractor

  • Unlike similar models in this JD series, its rollover protection system (ROPS) is fixed. As such, when planning to trailer or store it, be wary of its folding bars and ensure you check its height clearance.
  • Its size doesn’t affect its performance. It can do any garden tasks with loads of ‘large tractor’ features.
  • It produces less vibration and noise during operation. This is thanks to the isolators on its large rubber mounts.
  • Its fuel consumption. This should be among the least of your worries. Its fuel consumption is rated at 1.6 gallons per hour per 100% load. The fuel tank can allow 5.5 gallons, which is enough for several hours of work.

Features of JD 2305 Compact Tractor

Engine

Features of John Deere 2305 Compact Tractor

It uses the Yanmar 3TNV76 engine and boasts a 1.1 L 3-cylinder diesel engine that produces 24 horsepower. The 3 cylinders entail 1,116 cm2 natural aspirated diesel, 76.0 mm cylinder bore, and 82.00 mm amount of piston stroke. Its compression ration rating is 23:4:1.

This engine produces 24.5 PS at 3,000 RPM of maximum horsepower. It has an indirect fuel system, oil pressure switch, pressurized lubrication system, paper oil filters, and dual dry air cleaner. It can be fueled with either No. 1, no. 2, or B5 biodiesel.

Transmission

john deere 2305 tractor review

It has a hydrostatic transmission and 2-range reverse and forward gears. Its standard hydraulic power steering enables constant maneuvers, thus less fatigue for the gardener.

One downside, however, is its lack of cruise control. They’re optional for this tractor. Those made me miss my experience with John Deere 455. Their absence can prove daunting, especially if you’re working on a vast space. I would suggest you opt to have the cruise controls fixed unless you wish to work out your calves. Also, you can order this machine with pre-installed cruise controls.

Its hydrostatic power steering comes in 4WD, open tractor station with two roll-over protections, wet disc brakes, and a 21.0 liters fuel tank.

John Deere 2305 Attachments

Thanks to its compatibility with the iMatch Quick-Hitch system, hooking this machine to supplemental implements is very easy.

john deere 2305 attachments

They’re powered from its mid and rear-mounted PTOs that have 3 selectable ranges. Both can run free of any clutch, maximizing efficiency and saving the PTO system from uncalled engagement and disengagements.

The attachments available for John Deere 2305 compact tractor include:

  • A 260 backhoe
  • Four-foot rotary cutter
  • John Deere 62C mower deck with 3 blades
  • John Deere 200CX loader. Renowned for facilitating its movement along loose gravel.
  • John Deere 54C mower deck with 3 blades. This one in specific gives it impressive stability when working around hills.

JD 2305 Hot Extras

  • Seat
jd 2305 tractor features

It has lots of space around the seat; it’s upon you to choose the position that’s best for you. This makes it cozy to use over long periods. However, the hydraulic control levers in the cab area may deem uncomfortable, especially if you’re adorned with long legs like me. Luckily, this is adjustable.

  • Lockable Lever

You’ll be forgiven for taking this for granted. Well, the lock on its lever is handy in preventing possible accidental engagement of the hydraulics.

  • Perfectly Positioned Controls

Unlike some garden tractors, I won’t mention names; John Deere 2305 compact tractor has its gauges perfectly positioned. This makes it easy to read during the operation.

Its twin touch 2-pedal transmission system allows for instant change of direction and speed of travel. As if that wasn’t enough, its pedals were cleverly designed to follow the operator’s leg motion. This explains why they have less fatigue during usage.

How to Operate John Deere 2305 Compact Tractor

Depending on the locality of usage, operating this machine may necessitate, the acquisition of some licenses-this is quite rare.

Upon purchase, JD 2305 tractor, just like most machinery, comes with a users’ manual. In its absence, especially after a second-hand buy, you can always order one online from John Deere.

So how does it operate? Just as an overview, the pedals engage its hydrostatic transmission upon ignition and engagement of the pedals. I have to say that the smooth engagement is a real highlight-it that enables quick switch of reverse and forward gear without any ‘jumpy’ starts.

The transmission then transfers power to its mechanical 4-wheel drive system, and the rest is as you can guess. Any other traction is noticeable when working on a slippery surface.

Pros and Cons of John Deere 2305

  • Nice tractor
  • Very functional
  • It’s easy to service as well.
  • Comfortable and easy to drive
  • Ability to work with standard equipment
  • Everything works as it should and does what you expect.
  • Enables easy installation and removal of attachments such as the mower deck and bucket

Cons:

  • Service sucks

  6. Inefficient Cooling System:
    • William Hernandez, a farm owner in Colorado, found that the cooling system in some 2305 models was not efficient, leading to overheating during extended use.
    • Severity: Moderate, especially in hot climates.
    • How to Fix: Ensure the cooling system is clean and functioning correctly.

Care and Maintenance of John Deere 2305 Compact Tractor

I’ve had minor issues with this machine. But, perfection being impossible, it’s no exception. During the first two winter seasons, I had a problem removing the radiator and its cooling fan disintegrating. Luckily, this was sorted under warranty. Since then, other than the standard battery and belts replacements, it’s been a breeze.

Getting Personal with JD 2305 Compact Tractor-Could You Be Next Victim?

Pardon me for this, but I feel this review shouldn’t end without sharing this personal experience. Among the many things that piss me and that will ever piss me is to ever overhear anyone compare John Deere 2305 compact tractor to a lawnmower.

Five years ago, I overheard such a comparison, and it really touched me. I mean, comparing this top type machine with a lawnmower is like comparing apples and oranges. Is that allowable?

Before you start passing judgments, why not buy yours and let’s keep the discussion burning in the below comments section.

In as much as you don’t expect it at the price I got mine ($11,069 in 2011), believe me, you, JD 2305 compact tractors are one of the most quality yet affordable machines you’ll ever see.

  3. the rear pto broken and they tell me it will be 6000 to fix it because there is a problem with the shaft and they have fixed the problem, but it is up to the owner to to pay for there mistake I think it should have been a recall the same as it is on a car and not on the buyer, you have to change the whole housing to change one shaft, but beside what the tractor is great
